Primer Availability Update

We all know how difficult it’s been to secure a case of primers within the last 15+ months. Federal, CCI, and to a lesser extent, Winchester, have all been non-existent. Through all of the shortages, hoarding, and finger pointing, Remington is one of the few manufacturers that have continued to allocate a portion of their primer manufacturing to the reloader and hobbyist. Let’s extend our appreciation by supporting one of the industry’s most successful manufacturers, Remington, at every opportunity available.

Currently, we have Remington rifle primers in a variety of sorts; Small Rifle, Small Rifle Bench Rest, and Large Rifle. Remington pistol primers have become more readily available recently. However, our inventory on pistol primers was exhausted over the past weekend (3/14).

Primers from other manufacturers that are currently in stock are the Wolf Small Rifle .223 Rem Primer, Wolf Small Rifle Magnum, and Winchester Large Rifle. The Wolf .223 primer is designed with a harder cup to withstand potential slam-fires in the AR15/M16 and other automatic firearms. We’ve found this to be an exceptional primer for high-volume shooters. The Small Rifle Magnum is a “hotter” primer for use in extreme weather conditions and with slower burning powders.

Feel free to check our website periodically or give our tech staff a call and check your favorite primer’s availability.

I have been able to get remington and winchester large pistol primers so hats off to them! I also don’t want to leave out cci, i have not been able to get the cci primers but the 22 long rifle ammo from cci has been there! Thanks to all!

I have been uing the Rem Small Rifle B R primer all winter. I have had good luck with them and will stay with them in the future.

The Remington 6 1/2’s I got a few years ago were not suitable for the service rifle .223 loads I was using. They are soft and would leak gas torching the bolt face. They really wrecked a couple of ar-15 bolts. 7 1/2’s work fine and are my primer of choice.

Hi, thanks for the tech info on the Wolf .223 primers. Do they offer the harder cup on the large rifle as well? Very hard to find the #34 primers I use for gas rifles .308,30′06.

Thanks again, I will order the Wolf primers,

    Bob Shunkwiler

    Dear Bob,

Wolf does not list a large rifle primer specifically for the semi auto .308 or .30-06 that has the hard cup like the .223 primer. My experience has been that as long as you uniform the primer pockets so you primer is always well below flush and steer away from the softer cup primers like the Federal 210 match ( even though some National match target shooters still will use them in the M1A and AR10) you probably will not have a problem. Always make sure though the muzzle is pointed down range when you chamber a round. Even with the CCI M34 mil spec primers.

    Take care!

The following is what another web site has to say about Wolf small rifle primers

“The WOLF Standard Small Rifle Primers have an all COPPER CUP, which is a little more sensitive than the brass cup magnum primers. If you are loading for an AR15 or Military Style semi auto rifle, or are loading high pressure cartridges in any other type of rifle ,we recommend you use the Magnum Small rifle primers. Both primers use the same amount of compound. The only difference is in the cup hardness.”
